My First Eye Test at the Hospital

This downloadable four page PDF leaflet is a simple step-by-step explanation of what will happen when a patient attends their first hospital eye clinic appointment, including:

  • Arriving at the hospital

  • Meeting an orthoptist / optometrist / ophthalmologist

  • Procedures they may encounter

  • What may happen next

My Eye Test at School

This downloadable three page PDF leaflet is a simple step-by-step explanation of what will happen when a patient has an eye test at school, including:

  • Going to the school medical room.

  • Meeting an orthoptist / optometrist

  • Procedures they may encounter

  • What may happen next

The leaflets can be read through with the patient prior to their appointment to prepare them what to expect during their visit. It can then be used during the visit, e.g. whilst they wait for the next clinician, so they know who they will be seeing next.

Using symbols as well as words helps children and adults with all abilities to make sense of what is happening to them in an often unfamiliar and frightening environment.

There is also a separate PDF checklists for the child to fill in to ensure they have everything they need for their visit.

For convenience, the documents are designed to be printed on either A4 or A5 paper.

Not all hospitals run clinics with the orthoptist, optometrist and ophthalmologist all on the same day. In some hospitals the ophthalmologist may do the glasses check. In other hospitals the optometrist may check the patient’s eye health. Please check your appointment letters to see who will be checking the patient’s eyes.
