This book is designed to help responders to medical emergencies ask questions and understand responses from people for whom communication is difficult.

Symbols are an effective communication tool in assisting dialogue with people that have learning disabilities, people who do not speak English and people who cannot speak or hear due to their current condition.

The responder can point to the symbols to add meaning to any questions or statements to the patient. The patient can also respond by pointing to symbols.

As medical situations normally progress from first contact through to diagnosis and initial treatment. The layout of the book mirrors that progression. The core sections of the book follow the medical assessment mnemonic, SAMPLE. In addition, the back of the booklet provides easy access to a pain scale and core responses that may be used at any time. For example, the responses ‘Yes’ and ‘No’.

The book is produced on premium Xerox NeverTear Plastic Paper. The pages are durable, tear-resistant and water resistant, making the book robust for all situations.
